Recap: UC Santa Barbara vs. Cal Poly

Santa Barbara, CA (Sports Network) - Kyle Boswell scored 23 points off the bench to pace the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos as they defeated the Cal Poly Mustangs, 83-81, in a double overtime Big West Conference thriller at the Thunderdome.

Boswell was 6-of-10 from the field while knocking down three 3-pointers for the Gauchos (7-10, 3-3 Big West), who won their second consecutive game. Taran Brown (15 points, seven rebounds), Nate Garth (13 points, eight assists), Michael Bryson (10 points, five rebounds, three steals and three blocks), and Mitch Brewe (10 points) all added significant performances in the win.

Reese Morgan led all scorers with 26 points while making good on 7-of-11 3- point attempts for the Mustangs (7-9, 3-3), who have lost three in a row. Chris Eversley put together a solid double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds in a losing effort for Cal Poly.

The Mustangs led 32-27 at the break despite shooting 29.0 percent from the field after they were able to draw 11 fouls and make 11-of-14 tries at the free-throw line.

The second half saw the Gauchos battle back and outscore Cal Poly, 39-34, while shooting 60.0 percent from the floor. After Morgan hit a 3-pointer to put the Mustangs up 66-63 with 1:02 remaining, Brown responded with a 3- pointer of his own to even the score with 40 seconds left in regulation. After Jamal Johnson missed the final shot attempt of the second half, the contest progressed into overtime.

There was some back-and-forth action in the inaugural extra session, but Brew put in a layup with 11 seconds remaining to tie the game up at 71 and force a second overtime.

In the second overtime, each time the Mustangs took the lead the Gauchos answered right back. Two made free-throws by Boswell with 12 seconds left sealed the deal for UCSB as Eversley game-tying shot attempt on Cal Poly's last possession was off the mark.

The Gauchos shot 47.3 percent throughout the game while holding the Mustangs to 37.9 percent shooting.
