Recap: Hawaii vs. CS-Northridge

Honolulu, HI (Sports Network) - Hauns Brereton knocked down a pair of free throws with 9.7 seconds remaining to give the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors some breathing room as they picked up the 74-71 win over the Cal State Northridge Matadors in Big West Conference play at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Brereton finished with eight points for the Rainbow Warriors (7-5, 1-0 Big West) as they won for the second time in the last three outings. Leading the way on offense for the hosts was Christian Standhardinger with 17 points, adding eight rebounds, but at the same time he shot a miserable 1-of-9 at the free-throw line. Isaac Fotu registered a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards, as did Vander Joaquim with 12 points and 11 rebounds as well.

The Matadors (9-4, 0-1) were paced by Stephan Hicks who tallied a game-high 25 points, followed by Josh Greene and Stephen Maxwell with 15 and 14 points, respectively, the latter also grabbing 10 rebounds as the team had a two-game win streak snapped.

CSUN opened the meeting with a commanding 13-2 run, but the Rainbow Warriors refused to go away quietly and eventually battled back and went into the break with a 44-33 advantage, thanks to a sizzling 61.3 percent shooting from the floor in the period.

The second half began with the Matadors again making a significant move, this time using a 21-10 run over the first eight minutes in order to tie the score at 54-54. From there the teams remained close until Brereton came to the rescue.

The visitors had a chance to send the game into overtime, but a desperation 3- pointer from far above the top of the key by Landon Drew at the buzzer came up short. Drew finished the outing scoreless as he missed all seven of his field goal chances.

Cal State Northridge shot a mere 37.8 percent from the floor and 9-of-18 at the free-throw line, but because the Rainbow Warriors turned the ball over 18 times and managed to knock down only 16-of-31 at the charity stripe, there was always a chance for the Matadors to come away with the victory.
