Recap: Villanova vs. Rutgers

Villanova, PA (Sports Network) - Darrun Hilliard, JayVaughn Pinkston and Ryan Arcidiacono each scored 14 points as the Villanova Wildcats outlasted the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, 71-63, in Big East Conference action at The Pavilion.

Mouphtaou Yarou tallied 10 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks for Villanova (17-10, 8-6 Big East), which has won four of its last five contests. James Bell added 11 points for the hosts, as all five starters netted in double figures on the evening.

For Rutgers (13-12, 4-10), Myles Mack poured in 24 points on 7-of-11 from the field and 9-of-10 from the foul line, while Kadeem Jack and Jerome Seagears chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively. Mack also added eight points and five assists for the Scarlet Knights, who have lost eight of nine.

After Villanova got out to an early 14-8 lead, Rutgers closed out the first half on a 23-7 run to take a 31-21 advantage into intermission. The Scarlet Knights shot a modest 41.7 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes but made 9-of-10 from the foul line and held Wildcats to just 30 percent from the floor.

The Scarlet Knights continued to play the front-runners early in the second half until the Wildcats ripped off a 10-0 spurt to take a 44-43 lead with 11:22 remaining on a pair of Tony Chennault free throws. Villanova was able to ice the game late by outscoring Rutgers 12-5 in the final four and a half minutes.

Villanova scored 19 points off of 13 Scarlet Knight turnovers.
