Recap: Longwood vs. Florida A&M

Las Vegas, NV (Sports Network) - Nik Brown converted a pair of free throws with 10 seconds remaining in overtime, leading the Longwood Lancers to an 86-83 victory over the Florida A&M Rattlers in third-round action of the Las Vegas Invitational at Orleans Arena.

Despite missing a pair of free throws near the end of regulation that could have given Longwood the win, Tristan Carey still led the Lancers (1-4) to their first win of the season with a game-high 30 points. Carey was 11-of-17 from the floor and hit seven 3-pointers in the victory. Brown had a strong game offensively as well, pouring in 21 points, while Michael Kessens recorded a double-double for Longwood with 14 points and 16 rebounds and Jeylani Dublin registered 11 points and 11 boards.

The Rattlers (0-5) remained winless on the season despite a 26-point performance from Jamie Adams. Jamari Bradshaw added 18 points for Florida A&M, while Markee Teal and Muhammad Abdul-Aleem finished with 14 points each.

Both teams shot the ball well in the first half, with Longwood delivering on an even 50 percent of its shots (15-of-30), while Florida A&M came in just under that mark at 46.2 percent. The Lancers did knock down five 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes of play and took a slim 34-33 lead into the break.

The strong shooting continued for both squads after intermission, as the Rattlers converted 51.6 percent from the floor to force overtime. In the extra session, the two teams went back and forth with several lead changes before Longwood went up 82-81 with 01:21 remaining in extra session and did not relinquish the lead en route to the win.

Longwood won the game despite 21 turnovers. The Rattlers meanwhile, shot a miserable 13-of-25 at the free-throw line.

Longwood will take on the winner of the Presbyterian/Cornell matchup on Saturday for fifth place in this event. Florida A&M will take on the loser of that contest for seventh place.
