Recap: Iona vs. Loyola-Maryland

New Rochelle, NY (Sports Network) - Lamont Jones pumped in 35 points to propel the Iona Gaels to a 90-86 victory over the Loyola-Maryland Greyhounds in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference shootout at the Hynes Center.

Jones went 11-of-15 from the field and converted 9-of-11 at the free-throw line for Iona (16-13, 10-7 MAAC) as it snapped a three-game losing slide. Taaj Ridley and Curtis Dennis added 15 and 13 points respectively. Tre Bowman filled up the stat sheet with 14 points, eight rebounds, six assists and two blocks.

Erik Etherly registered a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds which he accompanied with five assists for Loyola (20-10, 11-6), which also received 23 points from Robert Olson. Anthony Winbush tallied 20 points and eight boards for the Greyhounds as they had their three-game winning streak come to an end.

Iona managed to go up by as many as 11 in the first half as it connected 43.8 percent of its field goal attempts before the break. The Greyhounds fought back in the closing minutes of the opening period as Olson connected on a triple to conclude a 9-0 run that sent the game into halftime tied at 36. The game was tied at the intermission despite Loyola's dominant, 26-10 edge in points in the paint.

The game remained close for the majority of the second stanza before the Gaels used an 8-2 run to take an 80-70 lead with just over two minutes remaining. Loyola shot 59.4 percent from the field after halftime but it also allowed Iona to hit on 76 percent of their field goal tries.

The Greyhounds outscored the hosts, 54-42, in the paint in the contest, but it was not enough to overcome Iona's 33-28 edge in the rebounding battle.
