Recap: Wyoming vs. Southern U

Laramie, WY (Sports Network) - Leonard Washington was named tournament MVP after he produced a game-high 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help the Wyoming Cowboys get past the Southern University Jaguars for a 67-60 victory in the final game of the Global Sports Hoops Showcase in the Arena-Auditorium.

Larry Nance Jr. and Derrious Gilmore contributed 12 points each for Wyoming (4-0), which remains undefeated after four games at home in Laramie. Nance Jr. also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to record his first career double-double. Luke Martinez struggled from the field, but managed to make all five of his free throw attempts to net 11 points.

Malcolm Miller came off the bench to tally a team-high 14 points for Southern (1-4), which lost to NC Central on Thursday night.

The Jaguars made 45.8 percent of their field goal attempts, including 4-of-8 from beyond the arc in the opening period. Wyoming was held to 35.7 percent shooting from the field and went 3-of-15 from three-point range in the first half, but it still managed to take a 29-28 lead into the intermission by converting 6-of-7 free throw attempts.

Southern hit six of its first nine three-point attempts after the halftime break to build a 46-38 lead with 10 minutes left to play. The Cowboys battled back to even the score at 56-56 at the 3:50 mark of the second half and outscored the Jaguars 9-4 down the stretch to remain unbeaten.

Wyoming took advantage of its trips to the free throw line by making 20 of its 22 attempts at the charity stripe. The Jaguars lost despite draining 47.6 percent of their attempts from beyond the arc.
