Recap: Western Mich vs. Oakland

Kalamazoo, MI (Sports Network) - Shayne Whittington scored 14 points and brought down eight rebounds before fouling out as the Western Michigan Broncos overcame the Oakland Golden Grizzlies 76-72 at University Arena.

Nate Hutcheson added 13 points and Darius Paul chipped in 12 points and brought down nine rebounds for Western Michigan (6-1) which has won six straight.

Travis Bader scored 18 points to lead five players in double figures for Oakland (2-6). Duke Mondy added 17 points, Corey Petros had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Drew Valentine had a double-double of his own with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Ryan Bass also chipped in 10 points.

Western Michigan led 40-36 at halftime by shooting an even 50.0 percent from the floor. Oakland kept it close despite shooting 38.7 percent by outscoring the Broncos 12-6 from beyond the arc.

Austin Richie nailed a 3-pointer with 1:48 remaining to tie the game at 70-70. The Broncos then went on a 4-0 spurt on a pair of free throws from Hutcheson and a layup from Dan Loney to pull away for the win.

Oakland lost despite having only seven turnovers to the 16 committed by Western Michigan. The Broncos bench outscored its counterpart 21-2.
