Recap: Morehead State vs. Jacksonville St

Morehead, KY (Sports Network) - Led by 19 points from Bakari Turner, the Morehead State Eagles defeated the Jacksonville State Gamecocks, 85-81, in an Ohio Valley Conference battle at Johnson Arena.

For the Eagles (12-14, 6-6 OVC), Devon Atkinson added 18 points, Chad Posthumus finished with 13, Jarrett Stokes accounted for 12 points and Kahlil Owens chipped in with 11.

Tarvin Gaines scored a game-high 31 points to lead the Gamecocks (15-9, 7-6), while Rico Sanders and Nick Cook each finished with 15 points.

In a tightly played first half, MSU shot 43.5 percent from the field as it took a narrow 27-26 lead at the break. The Gamecocks shot nearly the same, hitting on 44.4 percent of their field goal tries.

The Eagles connected on 62.2 percent of their shots, including 6-of-10 from 3- point range following intermission. The Gamecocks were even better, draining 69.2 percent of their field goal tries and 7-of-10 from beyond the arc. The Eagles had a 16-12 edge at the free-throw line in the period.

Trailing 81-76 with just 25 seconds to play, the Gamecocks scored five points in the span of three seconds to knot the score at 81-81. The Eagles were able to salvage the victory by hitting their free throws in the waning moments.

The Eagles scored 29 points off 19 JSU turnovers and had a 14-4 edge in second-chance points.
