Recap: Tenn-Martin vs. Arkansas State

Martin, TN (Sports Network) - Ed Townsel came off the bench to score 19 points to push the Arkansas State Red Wolves to a 77-73 victory over the Tennessee- Martin Skyhawks in a triple-overtime thriller at the Elam Center.

Townsel made only five of his 17 field goal attempts, but went a perfect 6-of-6 at the charity stripe for Arkansas State (2-1). Brandon Peterson contributed 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds while Trey Finn got into the mix with 12 points and four steals.

Justin Childs paced the Skyhawks (1-3) with 21 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. Myles Taylor provided a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds while Jeremy Washington also grabbed 11 boards.

ASU overcame an early 10-4 deficit by limiting UTM to 32.1 percent shooting from the floor in the opening half. The Red Wolves made only 13-of-33 field goal attempts in the first stanza, but Kelvin Downs tipped in a shot at the buzzer to give them a 32-28 lead heading into the intermission.

The game was back-and-forth battle after the break. Marcus Hooten made a 1-of-2 attempts on a late visit to the foul line to put ASU up by two-points with 15 seconds left on the clock. The Skyhawks answered in the closing moments of regulation as Childs found Washington for an overtime-forcing jumper with just one second left.

Childs put UTM up by 65-62 by scoring five points in the first overtime period, but Townsel drained three-pointer with three seconds left to send the game into a second extra session. Neither side managed to score a single point over the next five minutes, which created the need for a third overtime session.

Peterson converted an old fashioned three-point play to begin the overtime and added another two points with a layup on ASU's next possession. A made trey by Marcus Hooten and a 4-of-4 shooting performance at the foul line by Townsel lifted the Red Wolves to the four-point triumph.

Despite the loss, the Skyhawks held an impressive 58-40 advantage in the rebounding battle. ASU made up for its lack of rebounding success by forcing 20 turnovers.
