Recap: BYU vs. Tennessee St

Provo, UT (Sports Network) - Tyler Haws scored a game-high 22 points as he helped guide the BYU Cougars to an 81-66 win over the Tennessee State Tigers in season-opening play at the Marriott Center.

Also scoring in double figures for the Cougars (1-0) were Brandon Davies and Brock Zylstra with 16 and 11 points, respectively, the former adding seven rebounds and four blocked shots.

The Tigers (0-1) were paced by Kellen Thornton who tallied 20 points and eight rebounds, followed by Patrick Miller with 12 points and nine assists, although the latter shot just 3-of-10 from the field.

TSU led by as many as five points in the first half, but the squad ended up shooting just 38.5 percent from the floor in the period which allowed the Cougars to claim a 34-28 edge at the break.

In the second half the Tigers dipped to a mere 31.0 percent from the field which was barely half of the 61.5 percent converted by the hosts as BYU cruised to the 15-point win.

The Cougars made it into the win column despite turning the ball over 17 times, capturing just three offensive rebounds and hitting 16-of-25 at the free-throw line.
