Recap: BYU vs. San Diego

Provo, UT (Sports Network) - Tyler Haws scored 25 points for the BYU Cougars as they coasted to a 74-57 rout of the San Diego Toreros in a West Coast Conference tilt at the Marriott Center.

Haws was a perfect 9-of-9 from the free-throw line for the Cougars (15-5, 5-1 WCC), who have won seven of their last eight games. Brandon Davies (17 points, seven rebounds), Matt Carlino (11 points, six assists), and Brock Zylstra (10 points, seven rebounds) all played key roles in the triumph.

Johnny Dee scored 15 points and located five rebounds for San Diego (11-9, 4-1) as its five-game winning streak reached its conclusion. Christopher Anderson added 13 points and seven assists while being the only other Torero in double-figure scoring.

BYU led 43-31 at halftime after shooting 48.5 percent from the field and outscored San Diego, 20-6, in the paint. The Cougars also produced 10 fast break points before the break while the Toreros failed to score any transition points in the opening 20 minutes.

San Diego was unable to rally back after the intermission after going just 2- of-13 from distance and 6-of-12 at the charity stripe. BYU added 11 points off of turnovers over the final 20 minutes to collect the decision.

BYU held a 44-29 rebounding edge in the game and limited San Diego to 36.7 percent shooting.

In another move that bucks tradition, the Sharks completely revamped their on- ice leadership structure not by selecting new players to wear the precious singular letters on their uniforms, but by stripping the captaincy from Joe Thornton, removing the alternate tag from Patrick Marleau and leaving the other "A" vacant after Dan Boyle signed as a free agent with the Rangers.
