Jordan Baker and Nikolas Skouen netted 12 points a piece as Pepperdine (11-13, 3-8 WCC) snapped a four-game losing skid. Stacy Davis added 11 points.
Derrick Rogers paced Portland (9-17, 2-9) with 17 points while Kevin Bailey and Thomas van der Mars each chipped in 12 points with van der Mars also contributing 13 rebounds. Ryan Nicholas also registered a double-double with 11 points and 13 boards and Bryce Pressley had 10 points.
Portland came out as the more aggressive team and shot 9-of-10 from the free throw line in the opening period to take a 29-26 lead into halftime after trailing 25-18 at the 6:23 mark.
The Pilots held a slight advantage for most of the second half until a Jackson 3-pointer knotted the score at 57-57 with 1:54 remaining in regulation. Skouen and Nicholas traded triples in the final minute and after Jackson was unable to convert a layup at the buzzer, overtime was needed to decide the outcome.
Trailing 66-61 with less than a minute remaining in the extra session, Rogers scored four straight points to bring the Pilots to within one with seven seconds left. Jackson then took care of business with two free throws at the other end only to have Rogers draw a foul and make his two free throws, leaving Pepperdine ahead, 68-67. Baker once again extended the Pepperdine advantage to three at the foul line with four seconds remaining. A smart decision by Waves' coach Marty Wilson paid off when he opted to intentionally foul Rogers, who missed one of two. Jackson sealed the win with two more free throws with two seconds remaining.
