Recap: Ga Southern vs. Appalachian St

Statesboro, GA (Sports Network) - Nathan Healy recorded a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds for the Appalachian State Mountaineers as they defeated the Georgia Southern Eagles, 91-86, in a Southern Conference overtime thriller at the Hanner Fieldhouse.

Healy was 7-of-12 from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 from the free-throw line while earning two blocks and two steals on the defensive end of the ball for ASU (10-12, 6-5 SoCon), which has won two in a row. Four other Mountaineers reached double-figures in the scoring column including Tab Hamilton (16 points), Jay Canty (15 points, eight rebounds), and Tevin Baskin (12 points). The Eagles have lost two of their last three games.

Erik Ferguson supplied 23 points and eight rebounds for Georgia Southern (10-14, 4-7) while shooting 9-of-16 from the floor. Ben Drayton added 17 points off 7-of-8 shooting from the field while C.J. Reed tallied 19 but shot 7-of-20. Marvin Baynham managed 11 points and eight rebounds before fouling out in the final seconds of the game.

The Mountaineers trailed 37-27 at halftime after shooting just 40.7 percent from the field and going 0-of-6 from beyond the arc.

In the second half, ASU caught fire, shooting 57.7 percent from the floor and outscoring Eagles, 46-36. After going up by as much as seven points with 2:40 to go, the Mountaineers allowed Georgia Southern to battle back and tie the game with a free-throw by Baynham with three seconds left. Baynham made his first try, but missed the second sending which sent the contest into overtime.

ASU did not have the lead in overtime until there was 18 seconds on the clock when Canty put it up with a pair of successful free throw attempts. The Mountaineers went 12-of-12 from the free-throw line in the extra period and outscored the Eagles 18-13.

The Mountaineers earned 15 more attempts at the free-throw line than the Eagles throughout the game and made good on 14 of those attempts.
