Recap: Southern U vs. South Dakota

Laramie, WY (Sports Network) - Derick Beltran led the way with 17 points as the Southern University Jaguars downed the South Dakota Coyotes, 83-79, at Arena Auditorium as part of the Global Sports Showcase.

For the Jaguars (1-2), Jameel Grace and Javan Mitchell each added 16 points while Malcolm Miller and Yondarius Johnson both finished with 11 points. Mitchell also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

Trevor Gruis led all scorers with 23 points for the Coyotes (0-1) and finished just one rebound shy of a double-double. Karim Rowson contributed 19 points and converted 9-of-12 at the free throw line.

Southern shot well to open the game, knocking down 50 percent of its first half field goals attempts. South Dakota did not fare quite as well and connected on 41.9 percent of its shots from the floor which sent the Coyotes into the intermission trailing, 42-34.

The Coyotes found their shot in the second half, draining 58.3 percent of their attempts from the field. The Jaguars made 44.4 percent of their field goal tries and 14-of-17 at the charity stripe in the final 20 minutes. After trailing by as many as 14 points early in the second, the Coyotes slowly climbed back into contention. With just 12 seconds to play, the South Dakota lead was down to just two points, 81-79, but two free throws by Grace sealed the victory for Southern.

Southern won the battle of the boards,40-29. The Jaguars made just 20-of-31 from the free throw line, while the Coyotes were much more efficient, hitting on 16-of-19 from the charity stripe.
