Recap: FIU vs. South Alabama

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Mychal Ammons scored a game-high 21 points to lead all scorers as the South Alabama Jaguars defeated the FIU Panthers, 79-68, in a Sun Belt Conference bout at U.S. Century Bank Arena.

Augustine Rubit just missed a double-double for South Alabama (4-3, 2-0 Sun Belt) with 19 points and nine rebounds. Antoine Allen went 3-of-3 from beyond the arc and 4-of-4 at the foul line to produce 13 points. Freddie Goldstein got into the mix with 11 points and five assists for the Jaguars, who have now won back-to-back games.

Tymell Murphy registered a double-double for FIU (2-3, 1-1) with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Gaby Belardo added 14 points and four assists, Ivan Jurkovic scored 13 points, and Malik Smith netted 11 points.

Although FIU shot 46.2 percent from the floor before the break, it went into halftime trailing 41-33 after the Jaguars drained 8-of-16 attempts from three- point range in the first half.

South Alabama continued its stellar offensive performance after the intermission by converting 57.9 percent of its field goal attempts. The Panthers were unable to narrow the gap as they made only 12-of-39 of their shots from the floor in the final 20 minutes.

Despite the loss, FIU held a 37-31 edge in the rebounding battle.

The win made South Alabama's head coach Ronnie Arrow the winningest coach in Sun Belt Conference history as his record at the school is now 112-84.
