Recap: Samford vs. UNC Greensboro

Birmingham, AL (Sports Network) - Raijon Kelly finished with a game-high 25 points to lead the Samford Bulldogs over the UNC Greensboro Spartans, 75-71, in a Southern Conference matchup at the Pete Hanna Center.

For the Bulldogs (11-18, 9-7 SoCon), Tim Williams added 16 points and Tyler Hood chipped in with 14 points.

Trevis Simpson led the Spartans (8-19, 6-10) with 22 points, Derrell Armstrong finished with 19 points and six assists and Kayel Locke tallied 10 points.

Both teams shot well to open the contest. Samford connected on as 56.7 percent of its field goal tries in the first half, including as scorching 9-of-14 from beyond the 3-point arc, as it took a commanding lead into halftime, 45-31. Although it made 52.7 percent of its field goal tries, UNCG couldn't keep pace with Samford on the perimeter, as it shot 4-of-7 from 3-point range in the first half.

After the break, the Bulldogs cooled off a bit, making 47.4 percent of their field goal tries, which included misses on all five of their tries from 3- point distance. The Spartans knocked down 56 percent of their shots from the field in the second half as they attempted their comeback. After going up by as many as 18 early in the second half, the Bulldogs saw their lead shrink to just one, 72-71, with 17 seconds remaining, but Samford finished the game 3- of-4 from the foul line to seal its fate.

The Bulldogs had the edge on the boards, outrebounding the Spartans, 30-22. The Spartans finished with nine steals on the night.
