Recap: UNC Greensboro vs. Western Carolina

Greensboro, NC (Sports Network) - Trey Sumler led the way with 21 points as the Western Carolina Catamounts outlasted the UNC Greensboro Spartans, 70-68, in a Southern Conference matchup at Greensboro Coliseum.

For the Catamounts (11-15, 8-6 SoCon), Tawaski King added 13 points and Brandon Boggs chipped in with 11 but shot just 3-of-14 from the floor along the way. . Derrell Armstrong led the Spartans (7-17, 5-8) with 18 points, while Nicholas Paulos finished with 16, Trevis Simpson scored 15 points and David Williams contributed 10.

UNCG shot 47.8 percent from the field in the first half, including 4-of-9 from beyond the 3-point arc, as it took a 34-31 lead into intermission. WCU made just 40 percent from the floor through the first 20 minutes, including 2-of-7 from 3-point range.

The Catamounts continued to struggle from the field in the second half, making only 34.5 percent of their shots, though they did connect on 4-of-10 from 3- point range. The Spartans were somewhat better, hitting on 40 percent from the field but just 3-of-12 from beyond the arc. The teams traded leads after half and the Catamounts were down one, 66-65, with 1:31 to play, They finished the contest on a 5-2 run, scoring all their points at the free-throw line on 5-of-6 shooting, as they pulled out the road victory.

The Catamounts dominated the boards, outrebounding the Spartans, 41-30, and had the edge on points in the paint, 19-5.
