Recap: USC vs. Texas

Maui, HI (Sports Network) - J.T. Terrell forced overtime with a bucket in the final minute of regulation, then sealed the game by hitting four late free throws in the extra session, as the USC Trojans held off the Texas Longhorns, 59-53, in the Maui Invitational at Lahaina Civic Center.

Eric Wise scored 13 points for the Trojans (3-1), who will play Marquette in Wednesday's fifth-place game. Jio Fontan tallied 11 points and six assists while Byron Wesley recorded 10 points and seven rebounds.

For Texas (2-2), Julien Lewis paced all scorers with 17 points on 6-of-8 from the field. Sheldon McClellan added 11 points, Ioannis Papapetrou chipped in 10 points, and Javan Felix had six points, six boards, and eight assists for the Trojans, who will take on Mississippi State in the seventh-place game on Wednesday.

USC started the game on an 8-1 run, but Texas climbed back in it before the end of the half as the squads went into intermission tied, 26-26.

The teams continued on the seesaw in the second half. The Longhorns took a 47-45 lead with 1:36 left in regulation on a Lewis jumper, then after empty possession by both teams, USC answered with Terrell's game-tying bucket with 26 second left. Texas held the ball for one last shot but a Lewis three- pointer did not fall and the game went to overtime.

In the extra session, Dewayne Dedmon broke a tie by converting a three-point play to make it 54-51 in favor of the Trojans. A McClellan jumper with 25 seconds left brought the Longhorns to within two, but Terrell closed out the game by going 4-of-4 from the free throw line in the final seconds.

USC shot 34.4 percent from the floor in the game, while Texas made 37 percent of its field goal attempts. The Longhorns were plagued by 17 turnovers.
