Recap: Chaminade vs. Illinois

Maui, HI (Sports Network) - Joseph Bertrand scored 14 points in just 17 minutes off the bench as Illinois defeated Chaminade, 84-61, in the semifinals of the Maui Invitational at the Lahaina Civic Center.

Also scoring in double figures for the Fighting Illini (5-0) were Brandon Paul with 13 points, D.J. Richardson 11 and Tyler Griffey with 10 points in the triumph.

The Silver Swords (3-2), who stunned Texas on Monday in the regional round of the tournament, were paced by De'Andre Haskins who tallied a game-high 19 points, while Bennie Murray chipped in 10 points.

Illinois opened the meeting on an 8-0 run and never looked back, shooting 6- of-15 behind the three-point line en route to a 37-21 advantage at the break.

In the second half the Illini stretched their lead as high as 25 points, thanks to 53.6 percent accuracy from the floor and 12-of-14 shooting at the free-throw line.

Chaminade tried to attack the Illini from the perimeter, but the hosts made good on just 9-of-28 shots from three-point range in the setback.

With the victory, Illinois now takes on Butler in the title game on Wednesday, while the Silver Swords go up against North Carolina.
