Recap: Xavier vs. Saint Josephs

Brooklyn, NY (Sports Network) - A pair of free throws by Langston Galloway with just over one second remaining in regulation provided the Saint Joseph's Hawks with a thrilling 58-57 win over the Xavier Musketeers in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament at the Barclays Center.

Galloway finished the night with a team-best 14 points for the 10th-seeded Hawks (18-12), while Carl Jones and Halil Kanacevic both contributed 11 points, the latter also accounting for seven rebounds and six assists before fouling out.

With the victory, Saint Joseph's now heads to the quarterfinals on Friday where it will take on second-seeded VCU.

The seventh-seeded Musketeers (17-14) were paced by Travis Taylor who tallied 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds, followed by Brad Redford and Semaj Christon with 14 and 10 points, respectively, although the latter shot just 3- of-14 from the floor on the evening.

The Hawks shot a disappointing 37.5 percent from the floor in the first half, including 2-of-9 behind the 3-point line, but thanks to a perfect 8-of-8 at the free-throw line the team was able to establish a 28-25 lead at the break.

In the second half a 10-0 run by Xavier gave the Musketeers an eight-point edge midway through the period, but immediately thereafter Saint Joseph's registered a 12-0 run of its own in order to surge ahead yet again.

After Galloway gave the Hawks the one-point lead in the waning moments, Xavier had a chance to win the game as it threw the inbounds pass the length of the court. The ball deflected off the backboard at the other end of the floor and landed in the hands of Isaiah Philmore who was three feet from the basket, but his layup attempt bounced off the back of the rim as time expired.
