Recap: UAB vs. SMU

Tulsa, OK (Sports Network) - Jordan Swing made the game-winning layup with nine seconds remaining, as UAB defeated SMU, 53-52, in the first round of the Conference USA Tournament.

UAB (16-16), who earned the seventh seed in the tourney, will face second- seeded Southern Mississippi on Thursday.

Swing scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed nine boards for the Blazers. Rod Rucker had 11 points and seven rebounds.

Jalen Jones recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Cannen Cunningham added 11 for the Mustangs (15-17), who entered the game having lost nine of their last 13 regular-season games.

Down 51-43 with 3:43 to go, Cunningham drilled a 3-pointer and started a 9-0 run for the Mustangs. Brian Bernardi sank a pair of free throws to end the run and gave SMU a 52-51 edge.

Swing, though, would emerge as the hero, making the layup to put the Blazers on top.

Nick Russell attempted a jumper at the buzzer but was blocked by Robert Williams, giving UAB the win.

The Blazers led the entire first half but the Mustangs kept it competitive. Up 24-21 with 4:50 remaining in the first half, Rucker made a three-point play to start a 9-2 run to give the Blazers a 32-23 advantage at halftime.
