Recap: Houston vs. Rice

Tulsa, OK (Sports Network) - TaShawn Thomas recorded a double-double with a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds as the Houston Cougars defeated the Rice Owls, 72-67,in the first round of the Conference USA Tournament at the BOK Center.

Danuel House was two-rebounds shy of a double-double with 14 points for the Cougars (19-11). Jherrod Stiggers put up 11 points off the bench and Joseph young chipped in 10. Houston will go on to face the Texas-El Paso Miners next round.

For the Owls (5-26), Tamir Jackson contributed a game-high 30 points along with nine rebounds. Julian DeBose and Austin Ramljak added 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Rice was held to 8-of-29 from the floor in the first half. Houston knocked down 14-of-28 field goal attempts including 4-of-9 beyond the arc, en route to the 36-25 advantage at the break.

Rice came back in the second half to tie up the game 67-67 with less than two minutes remaining. Houston took a three-point lead with 38 seconds left and never looked back.

Houston made 51.9 percent from the floor and held Rice to a mere 26-of-70 field goal attempts.
