Recap: Nicholls vs. McNeese State

Katy, TX (Sports Network) - Dontae Cannon finished with 23 points and six rebounds as the eighth-seeded McNeese State Cowboys defeated the fifth-seeded Nicholls Colonels, 62-59, in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament at the Leonard E. Merrell Center.

Kevin Hardy added 11 points, eight rebounds and four steaks for McNeese State (14-16), which will advance to the second round to take on the No. 4 seed, Southeastern Louisiana.

Fred Hunter registered a double-double of 21 points and 14 rebounds for Nicholls (9-21), which also received 14 points and seven boards from T.J. Carpenter. Dantrell Thomas scored 10 points as the Colonels were downed for the third time in four games.

The contest was tied at 58 with under a minute remaining, but Cannon put McNeese State ahead with a layup. Shane Rillieux made 1-of-2 at the free-throw line for Nicholls before Cannon iced it with a pair of makes at the charity stripe in the closing seconds.
