Recap: BYU vs. Washington

Provo, UT (Sports Network) - Tyler Haws erupted for a game-high 37 points as the BYU Cougars claimed a 90-79 win over the Washington Huskies in the first round of the 76th annual NIT at the Marriott Center.

Haws converted 15-of-24 shots from the floor and knocked down all six of his opportunities at the free-throw line for the third-seeded Cougars (22-11) as they extended their season. Brandon Davies came up a rebound shy of a double- double as he dropped in 22 points, while Matt Carlino filled out his stat line with 20 points, nine assists and seven boards.

The sixth-seeded Huskies (18-16) were paced by C.J. Wilcox who led four players in double figures with his 20 points, while Shawn Kemp Jr. logged a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 11 boards in the setback. Andrew Andrews chipped in 12 points and Aziz N'Diaye posted 10.

Washington led by as many as three points in the first half, yet even with 6- of-10 shooting beyond the arc in the frame the visitors led by just two at the break, 35-33. The Cougars shot a mere 33.3 percent from the floor and 2-of-12 on the perimeter over the first 20 minutes, but managed to stay close with 11- of-12 at the free-throw line.

In the second half BYU bounced back in a big way with 58.3 percent accuracy from the floor and again missed just once at the charity stripe (10-of-11) as it pulled out the double-digit win.

In a game that featured seven ties and eight lead changes the Cougars, who now go up against the survivor of the Mercer/Tennessee contest in the second round of the tourney, got a staggering 85 points from their starters.
