Recap: BYU vs. Mercer

Provo, UT (Sports Network) - Brandon Davies registered a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds as the BYU Cougars coasted to a 90-71 win over the Mercer Bears in the second round of the National Invitational Tournament at the Marriott Center.

Tyler Haws made all seven of his free-throw attempts en route to 24 points for the Cougars (23-11), who will take on the Southern Miss Golden Eagles in the next round. Matt Carlino filled up the stat sheet with 18 points, nine assists and six rebounds while Brock Zylstra tallied 14 points and six boards.

Travis Smith paced Mercer (24-12) with 19 points and Langston Hall tallied 15 points. Daniel Coursey added 12 points while Jakob Gallon contributed nine points, nine assists and seven rebounds for the Atlantic Sun regular season champions.

BYU took a 44-35 lead into the intermission after it hit on 6-of-10 from beyond the arc. Mercer trailed by nine points at halftime despite shooting a red-hot 51.9 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes.

Although the Cougars converted just 44.1 percent of their field goal tries after the break, they managed to extend their advantage in the second period by tallying 16 second chance points and sinking 12-of-17 at the free-throw line. The Bears hurt their chances of staging a comeback as they shot just 37.1 percent from the field in the second half.

BYU led from wire-to-wire and held a 20-10 advantage in points off turnovers.
