Recap: Miami-Florida vs. UCF
Coral Gables, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Led by 19 points and six assists from Calvin Newell, the UCF Knights got past the Miami-Florida Hurricanes, 63-58, in an intrastate battle at the BankUnited Center
Kasey Wilson added 16 points and nine rebounds for the Knights (3-1), while Isaiah Sykes finished with 11 points and Tristan Spurlock posted a double- double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
For the Hurricanes (3-2), Garrius Adams led the way with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Davon Reed scored 17 points and Rion Brown chipped in with 11 points.
Both teams struggled from the floor in the first half. Miami made just 34.5 percent of its field goal tries and missed all but one of its 10 3-point attempts. UCF wasn't much better, making 39.3 percent of its shots from the field but it did manage to make 3-of-8 from beyond the arc, allowing the Knights to take a 28-21 lead going into halftime.
The teams improved their shooting in the second half. The Hurricanes hit on 43.3 percent from the field and 4-of-12 from 3-point distance. The Knights made 48.4 percent of their field goal attempts but just 1-of-6 from 3-point distance. The Knights led for the entire second half but never by more than 11 points. Down 60-58, the Hurricanes had a chance to tie the game in the final minute, but Donnavan Kirk missed two free-throws with 38 seconds remaining in regulation, and the Knights were able to escape with the road victory.
UCF had a slight rebounding edge, 43-36. Miami got more production off its bench, with its reserves finishing with a 19-6 scoring advantage over those from UCF.Game Notes
