Recap: Virginia vs. James Madison

Charlottesville, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Malcom Brogdon led the way with 11 points and four rebounds to help the 24th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers defeat the James Madison Dukes by a 61-41 margin at John Paul Jones Arena.

Brogdon started off the game with a three and was 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Anthony Gill also contributed 11 points and was successful on all four of his field goal attempts.

"It was great. It was a great feeling just being out there with my teammates, not watching from the sidelines. Getting my first win since my freshman year was nice. I have easy teammates to play with. Were really unselfish and play well together. Im really excited for our future," said Brogdon.

Mike Tobey and Darion Atkins both contributed 10 points as Virginia (1-0) has won all nine contests against James Madison (0-1) dating back to 1977-78.

Sophomore guard Ron Curry tallied 11 points and three steals for the Dukes. Charles Cooke and Tom Vodanovich both added nine points in the defeat.

"We have a team that is willing to share the ball, but we havent learned how to do it against outside competition just yet. I think the guys need to take advantage of the situation and its just not how you want to play winning basketball. This was a good learning experience for us. As a coaching staff we will look at the tape and get better from it," commented James Madison head coach Matt Brady.

Virginia went on an early 17-1 run in the first half. Tobey sank a hook shot at 10:06 to snap a three-minute span that saw no points for either team.

After a layup from Anthony Gill made it 19-11 for Virginia at 7:43, both teams could not add a single point until Akil Mitchell drove in for a layup at 4:24 for Virginia.

Curry drained a three with 1:14 remaining to halt a scoreless streak of over seven minutes for JMU. The Cavaliers took a 32-14 lead into halftime.

The Cavaliers doubled James Madison's offensive output when Justin Anderson drove in for a layup to make it 46-23 at 11:47 of the second half.

Vodanovich and Andrey Semenov drained consecutive 3-pointers to make it 48-29 at the 8:17 mark, but Joe Harris answered right back with a three of his own at 7:54 to stop any momentum that James Madison might have gained.

Jackson Kent added the final four points for James Madison on a layup and free throw shots before a layup from Darion Atkins of Virginia at 1:56 accounted for the final score.
