Recap: Iowa vs. Notre Dame

Iowa City, IA (SportsNetwork.com) - Aaron White and the Iowa Hawkeyes gave Notre Dame a rude welcome to the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

White totaled 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in leading the 23rd- ranked Hawkeyes to a 98-93 victory over the Fighting Irish at a raucous Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Roy Devyn Marble and Jarrod Uthoff each netted 17 points while Mike Gesell and Zach McCabe added 10 apiece for Iowa (8-1), which made its way into the Top-25 this week following a successful run in the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Garrick Sherman poured in 29 points and grabbed nine rebounds to pace the Irish (5-2), who were playing their first meaningful game as a member of their new conference. Eric Atkins checked in with 23 points and Jerian Grant finished with 13 points and 10 assists in the setback.

The Hawkeyes, who lost to Villanova in the championship round of the Battle 4 Atlantis on Saturday, led most of the first half Tuesday and brought a 52-43 advantage into the break.

The Irish, though, scored 14 of the first 17 points coming out of the locker room and went ahead 57-55 on an Atkins layup just over four minutes in.

Marble stopped the run with a 3-pointer and scored Iowa's next 13 points, though the Hawkeyes still weren't able to build a big enough lead until the closing minutes.

"In a tough atmosphere with some new faces, new roles, we answered just about every charge. We just didn't have much at the end," Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey said.

White broke a 71-71 tie with a dunk off a missed shot, then stole another offensive rebound away from a Notre Dame player before putting in a layup for an 85-79 lead with just under three minutes to play.

Atkins kept Notre Dame close by hitting a 3-pointer, but two free throws by Gesell and a three-point play by White on back-to-back possessions made it a 90-83 Iowa advantage with 1:50 to play.

The closest the Irish got from there was three, and the Hawkeyes made enough free throws down the stretch to pull out the win.

"I'm really proud of our guys and how they maintained their composure," Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery said.
