Recap: Iowa State vs. Iowa

Ames, IA (SportsNetwork.com) - Georges Niang scored 24 points, Melvin Ejim added 22 as No. 17 Iowa State took down bitter rival Iowa with an 85-82 win Friday night.

Naz Long netted 13 points off the bench and Dustin Hogue registered a double- double with 12 points and 16 rebounds for the Cyclones (8-0), who avenged last year's 80-71 loss against the Hawkeyes. Iowa State has won four of the last five meetings in the series.

"You could feel the vibrations in the building again. Just an unbelievable atmosphere," Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg said.

Aaron White led all scorers with 25 points to go along with 17 rebounds, while Roy Devyn Marble tallied 19 points and six assists in the setback.

Jarred Uthoff scored 12 points off the bench and Mike Gesell added 11 points for the 23rd-ranked Hawkeyes (10-2).

"If you would've said we would outrebound them 49-35 I would say we win the game," Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery said. "I'm proud of our guys, our kids just kept fighting."

The Cyclones trailed 45-38 at halftime but opened the second half on an 8-2 run. Hogue and Ejim knocked down 3-pointers on successive possessions to cap the spurt and cut the deficit to one.

Following a jumper from White, Iowa State fired off seven straight points to take its first lead since the opening half after a three-point play from Hogue.

Marble hit a pair of free throws to regain the lead for Iowa but Ejim answered with a layup with 7:43 to play.

Uthoff countered with a dunk and the Hawkeyes lengthened their advantage to five, 82-77, after an Adam Woodbury free throw with 1:29 left in regulation.

Iowa State proceeded to run off eight straight to close out the game.

Ejim made a pair at the line to cut the deficit to one with 42 seconds left. Niang then made a tough layup in traffic on the following possession. Niang drove the near base line and went up under the backboard to convert the layup and give Iowa State a slim 83-82 lead.

Gesell drove into the lane on the ensuing possession and was fouled by Monte Morris. Shooting 80 percent from the line this season, Gesell missed both attempts and the Hawkeyes were forced to foul.

Hogue made both of his attempts at the charity stripe and Zach McCabe's game- tying 3-pointer fell short. White grabbed the offensive rebound with five seconds left, but his layup was off the mark and the Cyclones held on for the win.
