Recap: Iowa State vs. Kansas

Ames, IA (SportsNetwork.com) - Naadir Tharpe led Kansas with 23 points as the 15th-ranked Jayhawks took down the No. 8 Iowa State Cyclones, 77-70, at Hilton Coliseum.

Andrew Wiggins had a double-double with 17 points and 19 rebounds, while Joel Embiid added 16 points, nine rebounds and five blocks for the Jayhawks (12-4, 3-0 Big 12), who have won three straight and six of their last seven.

"We know as a group, as a team, that we're getting better every day," Wiggins said. "If you practice hard, you play hard, and that's what we're doing."

DeAndre Kane, who was a game-time decision due to a sprained left ankle, led the Cyclones (14-2, 2-2) with 21 points, eight rebounds, and four steals.

"I really couldn't cut and go change of pace. But that's no excuse," Kane said of his injury.

Melvin Ejim added 15 points and Dustin Hogue contributed 13 points and nine rebounds as Iowa State dropped their second straight after starting off the season 14-0.

After Kane hit a 3-pointer as time expired to knot the game at 36 going into the break, Tharpe opened the second frame in similar fashion as the first with a trey 14 seconds in as the Jayhawks started off with a 9-0 run.

Iowa State got back to within seven after Hogue drained two foul shots to make it 48-41, but Perry Ellis' jumper and dunk extended the Jayhawks' lead to 11 with 13 1/2 minutes left.

The Cyclones hung around, as Ejim's tip-in got Iowa State within five, 54-49, with 11 1/2 minutes to go, but Kansas was too much.

Wiggins made it an 11-point game with five minutes remaining after tipping in a missed three from Wayne Selden Jr.

Matt Thomas drained a late three to get the Cyclones within five with under two minutes to go. Thomas stole the ball off Wiggins, but Kane missed a jumper forcing Monte Morris to foul.

Following two free throws from Tharpe, Kane only made 1-of-3 foul shots down the stretch, and the game was too far out of reach.

Tharpe's triple 59 seconds into the contest ignited a 15-4 Kansas run to start off the contest.

The Cyclones went on a 11-2 tear late in the half to take the lead. Morris went in on a layup to give Iowa State a 33-32 lead with 1:44 left, forcing a Kansas timeout.

After a dunk from Embiid and a Wiggins layup, Kane hit a three as time expired, knotting the game at 36 going into the break.
