Recap: Minnesota vs. Purdue

Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Austin Hollins scored 18 points and pulled down nine rebounds as the Minnesota Golden Gophers slipped by the Purdue Boilermakers, 82-79, in a Big Ten Conference battle at Williams Arena.

Andre Hollins accounted for 17 points and five assists for the Golden Gophers (12-3, 1-1 Big Ten) as they won for the seventh time in eight games. DeAndre Mathieu chipped in with 11 points and Malik Smith 10 off the bench for the hosts.

The Boilermakers (10-5, 0-2) were paced by Terone Johnson with 18 points, shooting 4-of-7 behind the 3-point line but just 5-of-15 from the floor overall. Ronnie Johnson accounted for 12 points and seven assists, while Sterling Carter contributed 10 points in a reserve role as the squad bowed for the second time in as many games.

Purdue shot a woeful 35.7 percent from the field in the first half, but the team managed to stay within striking distance at the break, down by only seven points (42-35) by hitting 5-of-12 beyond the arc.

The Gophers extended their lead to 19 points (61-42) eight minutes into the second half, but the team allowed the visitors to stick around and challenge right up until the end.

Purdue had a chance to send the meeting into overtime, but a desperation heave by Kendall Stephens from just inside the half-court line as time expired came up short.
