Recap: Penn State vs. Minnesota

University Park, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Elliott Eliason registered a double- double with 11 points and 12 rebounds as the Minnesota Golden Gophers slipped by the Penn State Nittany Lions, 68-65, in Big Ten Conference action at the Bryce Jordan Center.

DeAndre Mathieu scored a team-best 16 points for Minnesota (13-3, 2-1 Big Ten), while Andre Hollins pitched in with 14 points, although he shot just 4- of-12 from the field as the team won for the eighth time in the last nine outings.

The Nittany Lions (9-7, 0-3) were led by Tim Frazier who tallied 20 points and handed out eight assists in their third straight setback. Ross Travis recorded a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while Brandon Taylor tacked on 10 points, seven boards and four blocked shots in 20 minutes off the bench.

Both teams had trouble shooting the ball from the floor in the first half, but even with 36.7 percent accuracy and 1-of-7 behind the 3-point line, the Nittany Lion still moved out to a 35-30 advantage at the break. Penn State did manage to make good on 12-of-15 at the free-throw line, compared to just 7- of-15 for the visitors.

The second half showed the Nittany Lions struggling from the floor yet again (.393) and this time the squad also converted only 6-of-14 at the charity stripe. Conversely, Minnesota was 15-of-19 at the line, thanks in part to Malik Smith who knocked down all four of his chances in the final 30 seconds to help the Gophers get over the top.

Minnesota survived the meeting despite converting a mere 4-of-16 behind the 3- point line on the night.
