Recap: Northwestern vs. Minnesota

Evanston, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - DeAndre Mathieu scored 18 points to lead the Minnesota Golden Gophers to a 54-48 win over the Northwestern Wildcats in a Big Ten conflict at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Mathieu was the only player in double figures for Minnesota (17-9, 6-7 Big Ten), which had lost four of its previous five games.

JerShon Cobb nailed five 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 23 points for Northwestern (12-14, 5-8), which has lost three straight. Alex Olah tacked on 10 points and Drew Crawford cleared 11 boards, but hit on just 1-of-15 from the field before fouling out.

Northwestern made up for a 36 percent shooting effort in the first half by trading in 10 turnovers for 14 points. Minnesota shot a superior 50 percent, but the mistakes led to a 28-25 deficit at the break.

The Wildcats were not so fortunate in the final 20 minutes, when they recorded only seven field goals on 25 percent shooting. Despite another seven turnovers, the Golden Gophers were able to pull out the win, sinking 42.9 percent of their field goal tries in the second half.

Minnesota outscored Northwestern, 24-10, in the paint. The game featured seven ties and 11 lead changes.
