Recap: Wisconsin vs. Marquette

Madison, WI ( - Sam Dekker led five Wisconsin players in double-figure scoring with 20 points as the Badgers defeated the rival Marquette Golden Eagles, 70-64, at Kohl Center.

All five starters finished with at least 10 points for Wisconsin (10-0). Ben Brust had 13, Traevon Jackson 12, Frank Kaminsky 11 and Josh Gasser 10 to help the Badgers stay perfect on the season.

"I mean every win is very satisfying don't get me wrong, but this one felt pretty good because of what they did to us last year and handled us pretty good and you know they had bragging rights for this whole year," said Dekker.

Jamil Wilson contributed a game-high 22 points and Davante Gardner added 16 off the bench for the Golden Eagles. Chris Otule had 11 points and nine rebounds as Marquette (5-4) dropped its second straight game.

"I thought Jamil played good down the stretch. It was a three-point game at half," said Marquette head coach Buzz Williams. "And at the 17:59 mark I called timeout and Chris Otule had missed a seven-inch left-hand hook, got his rebound and traveled. Jamil missed a layup that was converted into a 3. And Derrick Wilson missed a floater. So in that sequence right there, if you remove those two minutes, the rest of the way Ithink that we outscored them by one."

Marquette entered the game riding a two-game win streak in the series, with the latest victory a 60-50 decision last December. The Golden Eagles had also won four of the last six meetings between the two schools.

Wisconsin led by three at halftime and started the second half on a 7-2 run that was capped off by a 3-pointer from Brust to own a 35-27 advantage.

Marquette later pulled within three, 57-54, after Wilson hit a shot from beyond the arc, but Kaminsky responded with a three of his own to put the Badgers back up by six with 1:33 left.

Wilson hit another triple and scored on a layup around two free throws from Brust to cut Wisconsin's lead to 64-59 with 21 seconds remaining.

Gardner hit a 3-pointer with six seconds left to bring Marquette within 68-64, but Wisconsin continued its strong free throw shooting to close out the game.

Wisconsin jumped out to an early 5-0 lead off a layup from Jackson and a three from Brust, but Marquette quickly tied the game at five.

Dekker scored all nine points during a 9-4 run that put the Badgers up 22-16 with six minutes left in the first half. He later drove through the lane and scored on a commanding dunk with 31 seconds remaining to allow the Badgers to take a 28-25 lead into the break.
