Recap: Georgetown vs. Marquette

Washington, D.C. (SportsNetwork.com) - Davante Gardner scored 20 points, leading five players in double figures, as the Marquette Golden Eagles captured a thrilling 80-72 overtime win against the Georgetown Hoyas in Big East Conference action at the Verizon Center.

Steve Taylor Jr. produced 14 points and a team-best eight rebounds off the bench for the Golden Eagles (11-8, 3-3 Big East) as they won for the second time in the last three outings. John Dawson and Jake Thomas both accounted for 12 points and Jamil Wilson 10, to go along with six rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots on the night.

Markel Starks scored a career-high 28 points for the Hoyas (11-7, 3-4), followed by D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera who dropped in 24 points as the team suffered a third-straight setback. Mikael Hopkins shot only 1-of-8 from the floor as he finished with six points, but still made an impact with a game- high 11 rebounds and five blocks.

The Hoyas were held to just two points through the first four minutes of the contest and ended up shooting a mere 28.6 percent from the field in the period, yet trailed by just a single point at the break, 28-27.

Starks had a chance to give the Hoyas a four-point lead with 17.2 seconds remaining in regulation, but he made only 1-of-2 at the free-throw line. At the other end, Todd Mayo converted a 3-pointer from the top of the key to knot the score at 65-65.

Starks then had an opportunity to win the game at the buzzer, but his 3- pointer bounced off the back of the rim, sending the meeting into overtime.

Marquette scored the first seven points of the bonus session and never looked back as it salvaged the eight-point victory on the road.

In a game that featured seven ties and eight lead changes Georgetown, which led by as many as seven late in the contest, shot only 37.7 percent from the floor.
