Recap: Providence vs. Seton Hall
Providence, RI (SportsNetwork.com) - Sterling Gibbs hit two free throws with 3.3 seconds remaining in double overtime to lift his Seton Hall Pirates to an 81-80 win against the Providence Friars in Big East Conference play at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
Providence's Tyler Harris was called for traveling on the ensuing inbounds, sealing the win for the Pirates.
Brian Oliver led the way for Seton Hall (10-4, 1-0 Big East) scoring 18 points, adding five rebounds and three steals. Brandon Mobley had 16 points and six rebounds, while Gibbs scored 15 off the bench. Patrik Auda rounded out the Seton Hall double-digit scorers, contributing 11. The Pirates have won six of their last seven games and three in a row.
Bryce Cotton led all scorers with 25 for Providence (10-4, 0-1) and dished out five assists. Tyler Harris scored 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting, pulled down nine rebounds but turned the ball over five times. LaDontae Henton had 12 points and seven rebounds in the loss. The Friars have dropped two in a row, both in overtime.
The Pirates shot 44.3 percent from the floor, including 50 percent (4-of-8) in overtime. Providence converted 42.9 percent from the field for the game.
Seton Hall let a 12-point second-half lead with 12:45 remaining slip away. Henton scored on a drive to the basket with 33.6 seconds left to tie the game at 58, sending it to overtime. There were 11 ties and 16 lead changes in the contest.
The Friars trailed 30-28 at halftime, but outscored the Pirates 30-28 in the second despite shooting 9-of-25 from the floor.
Providence held a 41-28 advantage on the glass, limiting the visitors to just five offensive rebounds, but the hosts knocked down just 5-of-17 shots beyond the arc as Cotton hit a mere 1-of-8 on the perimeter.
The loss for Providence snaps a 13-game winning streak at the Dunkin' Donuts Center that dated back to January 2013.Game Notes
