Recap: St Johns vs. Providence
Queens, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Bryce Cotton netted 21 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out eight assists to lead the Providence Friars past the St. John's Red Storm, 84-83, in a thrilling double-overtime Big East match at Carnesecca Arena.
Tyler Harris scored 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting for Providence (12-5, 2-2 Big East). Both LaDontae Henton and Kadeem Batts chipped in 17 points and nine rebounds apiece, while Batts hit 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. The Friars have won two in a row.
JaKarr Sampson paced the Red Storm (9-8, 0-5) with 16 points and eight rebounds. Phil Greene IV contributed 15 points, D'Angelo Harrison scored 14, and Orlando Sanchez chipped in 12 with four assists and four rebounds. Both God'sgift Achiuwa and Sir'Dominic Pointer each added 11 points in the loss. St. John's has lost five consecutive contests.
Providence hit just 37 percent of its shots in the first half, but still took a 36-29 lead into halftime. St. John's shot 41.4 percent in the frame.
The Friars' shooting percentage actually dropped to 36 percent in the second half, and the Red Storm were able to catch up and force overtime. St. John's hit 44.4 percent of its field goal attempts in the second period.
Cotton hit one free throw with 1:40 left to play in the overtime period, tying the game at 77-77, forcing a second extra period. His layup with nine seconds left in the second overtime put the Friars ahead, 84-83, which proved to be the final margin. Providence shot 38.5 percent in the overtime periods, including 1-of-5 from 3-point range. The Friars hit 6-of-11 from the free- throw line in overtime.
Providence held the edge in free-throws made, 30-20, but lost the battle in points in the paint, 54-28, to the Red Storm. St. John's made just one 3- pointer on 10 attempts in the game.Game Notes
