Recap: Providence vs. St Johns

Providence, RI (SportsNetwork.com) - D'Angelo Harrison scored 22 points and grabbed six rebounds as the St. John's Red Storm defeated the Providence Friars, 86-76, in a Big East Conference tilt at Dunkin' Donuts Center.

JaKarr Sampson tallied 21 points and seven rebounds for St. John's (14-9, 4-6 Big East). Rysheed Jordan netted 18 points with six assists, and Chris Obekpa chipped in 10 points and five boards. The Red Storm have won five of their last six games.

Bryce Cotton led all scorers in the game, netting 32 points on 11-of-25 shooting for Providence (16-7, 6-4). Cotton also notched six assists and four rebounds in the loss. Kadeem Batts tallied 15 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double, Josh Fortune added 12 points, and LaDontae Henton scored 10 with nine boards. The Friars have lost two of their last three contests.

St. John's shot an impressive 61.1 percent from the floor in the opening half, and went 4-of-7 from 3-point range, taking a 53-37 lead into the half. Providence shot 36.8 percent in the frame.

The Red Storm cooled off in the second period, connecting on just 34.6 percent of their shots to Providence's 40 percent shooting mark. The Friars outscored St. John's 39-33 in the half, but the damage had already been done in the first stanza.

St. John's had a monstrous edge in points in the paint, 42-18, and won the battle in points off turnovers, 19-4. Providence doubled up the Red Storm in 3-point scoring, 24-12.
