Recap: SMU vs. Rhode Island

Garland, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Nic Moore poured in 20 points and dealt out seven assists as the SMU Mustangs completed an 89-58 rout of the Rhode Island Rams in a non-conference bout at the Curtis Culwell Center.

Ben Moore added 13 points and nine rebounds off the bench as 14 different Mustangs (2-0) saw action in the lopsided victory. Markus Kennedy scored nine points in 15 minutes to help SMU win its second game in a row to begin the 2013-14 campaign.

E.C. Matthews led Rhode Island (1-1) with 15 points, but he also accounted for five of the team's 20 turnovers. Ifeanyi Onyekaba and Gilvydas Biruta tallied nine points each for the Rams. Onyekaba also pulled down a team-high seven boards in the loss.

SMU knocked down 44.4 percent of its field goal attempts in the opening 20 minutes of action en route to a 37-24 halftime lead. The Rams converted only 25 percent of their shots from the floor and missed all 10 of their attempts from beyond the arc in the opening half.

URI improved to shoot 36.4 percent from the field in the second half, but the Mustangs extended their advantage as they drained 69 percent of their shots from the floor including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc.

SMU managed to win by a 31-point margin despite an 11-of-24 showing at the charity stripe. The Rams finished with only 10 assists and allowed 19 points off of turnovers.

URI defeated the Mustangs, 72-50, when these teams squared off last December in the first meeting in history between the programs. SMU will play all its non-conference home games in Garland this season while renovations are completed at the Moody Coliseum.
