Recap: UNLV vs. Arizona State

Las Vegas, NV (SportsNetwork.com) - Jahii Carson poured in a career-high 40 points to lead the Arizona State Sun Devils to an 86-80 triumph over the UNLV Runnin' Rebels at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Carson shot 16-of-25 from the field and handed out seven assists for ASU (4-0), and his point total was the most by a Sun Devil since James Harden also scored 40 on Nov. 30, 2008. Jermaine Marshall scored 20 points, while Jordan Bachynski was outstanding as well with 17 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks. Egor Koulechov (10 rebounds) also corralled double-digit boards for the visitors.

For UNLV (2-2), all five started netted in double figures, paced by 18 points from Roscoe Smith, who also ripped down 21 rebounds, Khem Birch nearly had a triple-double with 11 points, 14 boards and eight blocks. Kevin Olekaibe logged 14 points, while Bryce Dejean-Jones and Kendall Smith each had 13 points.

Although neither team shot greater than 39 percent from the field in the opening half, UNLV carried a 38-34 lead into intermission after ending the frame on a 7-1 run.

The Rebels held a one-point lead with just over eight minutes to play when Koulechov drilled a jumper to put ASU ahead. The Sun Devils clung to a single- digit advantage down the stretch and sealed their fate by shooting 3-of-4 at the free-throw line in the final minute.

Neither UNLV (15-of-29) nor ASU (11-of-20) shot well from the stripe on the evening.
