SIU Edwardsville (1-5) at Oregon State (2-1) (ET)

GAME NOTES: The SIU Edwardsville Cougars will attempt to halt their three-game losing streak on Tuesday night when they take on the Oregon State Beavers at Gill Coliseum.

SIUE was a participant in the Portland State Tournament over the weekend and came away with losses in all three matchups, most recently falling to Loyola- Chicago on Sunday in a nail-biter, 73-72. The losing skid has only added to the disappointing start to the season for the Cougars, who have come away victorious just once in their first five games.

Oregon State has not been busy in the early going this season, playing just three games. The Beavers' latest contest came more than a week ago, when they made a cross-country trip to play Maryland and pulled off an impressive 90-83 triumph to improve to 2-1.

This matchup will mark the first-ever meeting between the Cougars and the Beavers on the hardwood.

The Cougars kept their matchup versus Loyola tight throughout, and Donivine Stewart hit a jumper and was fouled with 1:02 left to bring them to within one point of the lead, but he missed the ensuing free-throw and the team went on to miss two shots and commit a turnover in the final minute as they fell short. The squad shot an impressive 50.9 percent from the field in the setback and was led by a 22-point effort from Stewart, who drained 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Michael Messer was also impressive with 14 points off the bench. SIUE has scored 74.0 points per game this season on nearly 48 percent from the field, but its effort on the defensive end has been porous, allowing 84.0 points per contest. Stewart (14.2 ppg, 3.8 apg) and Tim Johnson (12.2 ppg) are the only two players to average in double figures, but the team has a deep bench with seven others putting up at least 5.5 points per game.

After going into intermission of its latest game tied with Maryland, Oregon State opened up the second half on a 12-2 run to take a double-digit lead and never looked back from there, as they shot a lofty 59.6 percent from the field while making 23-of-30 at the foul line in the great road win. Roberto Nelson led the way with 31 points and seven assists, while Devon Collier scored a career-high 29 points to go with 11 rebounds, two blocks and two steals. The Beavers have made a habit of filling up the scoreboard (80.7 ppg), and it's a good thing because they haven't been able to stop many people on the other end (78.0 ppg). Nelson is the nation's second-leading scorer in the early going with 30.3 points per game on 50 percent field goal shooting, and he also finds time to hand out 5.7 assists per outing. Collier (20.0 ppg, 11.0 rpg, 2.0 bpg) makes up the other half of an outstanding inside-outside combo, while Angus Brandt (9.3 ppg, 6.3 rpg) is also off to a solid start.

The Beavers have ample star power in Nelson and Collier, and even if their fast starts may not be attainable throughout the whole season, those two alone will be more than enough to dismiss a lackluster SIUE squad.
