Recap: Long Beach State vs. USC

Long Beach, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Caffey got a layup to fall with 17 seconds remaining to propel the Long Beach State 49ers to a 72-71 win over the USC Trojans in a non-conference duel at Walter Pyramid.

Caffey finished with a game-high 22 points for Long Beach State (2-9), which ended a nine-game losing streak. Tyler Lamb added 20 points off the bench and Dan Jennings had 10 points and eight rebounds.

Pe'Shon Howard paced USC (7-4) with 19 points, though his potential game- winning 3-point attempt was off the mark in the final seconds. Omar Oraby posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, Nikola Jovanovic netted 12 points and Julian Jacobs chipped in 11 points.

The 49ers rolled into the break leading 50-36. They knocked down 53.8 percent of their shots from the floor and recorded 10 more field goals than the Trojans, who shot at a modest 42.3 percent clip.

In the second half Long Beach State cooled off, making good on only 30 percent of their field goal attempts to let the Trojans storm back. USC took its first lead of the second half, 71-70, when Jacobs connected on a shot with 1:11 to play. After the teams traded turnovers, Caffey managed to hit what turned out to be the game-winner as Howard and Byron Wesley each missed 3-point attempts for USC in the last 10 seconds.

Long Beach Sate had a 20-8 edge in points off turnovers. USC won the battle of the boards (40-37) and outscored the 49ers, 18-7, from the free-throw line.
