Recap: IUPUI vs. Evansville

Indianapolis, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - D.J. Balentine scored 29 points as the Evansville Purple Aces earned an 84-78 road victory over the IUPUI Jaguars in a non-conference tilt at the Jungle.

Balentine went 7-of-14 from the field and nailed all 12 shots from the free throw line for Evansville (2-0). Blake Simmons and Duane Gibson added 15 points apiece.

Ian Chiles nearly matched Balentine as he netted 28 points for IUPUI (0-2). Khufu Najee tallied 19 points and Donovan Gibbs (18 points, nine rebounds) nearly had a double-double.

Both teams shot well in the first half. The Purple Aces connected on 51.7 percent from the field and IUPUI was even better at 55.6 percent. However Evansville had a 9-3 edge from beyond the arc and an 11-7 advantage at the free throw line. That was enough to give the Purple Aces a 44-38 lead at the break.

After halftime Evansville continued to shoot well (11-of-20) while going a perfect 17-of-17 from the charity stripe to hold on for the win. IUPUI had five 3-pointers after the break but shot just 43.8 percent overall.

Evansville doubled up the Jaguars from the free throw line (28-14). IUPUI had a 17-4 edge in points off turnovers.
