Recap: Southern Ill vs. Evansville

Carbondale, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - D.J. Balentine erupted for 33 points, shooting 6-of-10 behind the 3-point line, as the Evansville Purple Aces captured a 75-69 win over the Southern Illinois Salukis in Missouri Valley Conference action at SIU Arena.

Balentine made good on 11-of-20 shots from the floor, cleared six rebounds and handed out five assists for the Purple Aces (8-9, 1-3 MVC) as they snapped a three-game slide. Egidijus Mockevicius posted a double-double for the visitors with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Blake Simmons tacked on 10 points and seven boards of his own.

Mike Balogun led the Salukis (5-12, 1-3) with 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting beyond the arc, followed by Desmar Jackson with 13 points and nine rebounds and Anthony Beane 10 points as the team bowed for the fourth time in the last five outings.

Evansville started out rather slow, converting just 38.5 percent from the field in the first half, including a mere 2-of-10 behind the 3-point line, en route to a 33-27 deficit at the break.

In the second half the Purple Aces turned it around with an impressive 6-of-7 shooting beyond the arc, five of those conversions coming from Balentine who tallied 19 points in the period in order to lead the visitors to the victory.

SIU, which was beaten on the glass, 41-33, and outscored at the free-throw line, 21-14, entered the game having won 12 straight home meetings in the series with the Purple Aces. The last win for Evansville at SIU Arena before today was in 2001.
