Recap: Hawaii vs. Boise State

Honolulu, HI (SportsNetwork.com) - Anthony Drmic scored a game-high 21 points as the Boise State Broncos held on to defeat the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, 62-61, in the opening round of the annual Diamond Head Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Also scoring in double figures for the Broncos (9-2), as they ended a two- game slide, was Ryan Watkins with 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor.

The Rainbow Warriors (7-3) were paced by Brandon Spearman who tallied 17 points, followed by Keith Shamburger and Isaac Fotu with 13 and 12 points, respectively, as the squad had a five-game win streak snapped.

The Rainbow Warriors were slow to get out of the gate, needing more than three minutes to register their first points of the night. Boise State led by as many as eight points in the first half, shooting 52.4 percent from the floor, but the visitors fell behind by a point at the break, 32-31.

In the second half it was BSU that had a tough time finding the mark in the early going, but eventually the team connected on 5-of-11 shots behind the 3- point line in order to erase a five-point deficit and take the lead once more.

Hawaii had a chance to knot the score with 8.7 seconds remaining as Quincy Smith went to the free-throw line to shoot two, but he missed the first attempt before making the second.

Watkins then had an opportunity to give the visitors a potential three-point advantage with 4.7 seconds to play, but he missed the front end of a one-and- one, providing Hawaii one last chance to claim the win, but a desperation shot from just inside halfcourt by Garrett Nevels bounced off the rim.

In a game that featured six ties and 10 lead changes, the Rainbow Warriors hurt themselves with 16 turnovers and a number of key misses at the charity stripe.

Both teams entered the contest averaging 86.4 ppg, ranking them in the top 15 in the nation.

With the victory Boise State will now take on South Carolina in the semifinal round of the tournament on Monday.
