Recap: Northern Iowa vs. Indiana State

Cedar Falls, IA (SportsNetwork.com) - Khristian Smith scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the double-double as the Indiana State Sycamores outlasted the Northern Iowa Panthers, 87-81, in Missouri Valley Conference action at McLeod Center.

Dawon Cummings also netted 18 points for Indiana State (17-5, 8-2 MVC). Jake Odum chipped in 17 points and five assists, while Justin Gant poured in 14 and Manny Arop contributed 11. The Sycamores have won three of their last four games.

Deon Mitchell led all scorers in the contest with 21 points for Northern Iowa (11-11, 5-5). Wes Washpun had 18 points and six assists, and Seth Tuttle tallied a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. The Panthers have lost three of their last four contests.

Indiana State shot 40 percent in the first half, connecting on just 3-of-13 from 3-point range, and trailed Northern Iowa 45-34 headed into the intermission. The Panthers shot an impressive 60.7 percent from the field in the first frame.

Things picked up for the Sycamores in the second half, as they drained 54.5 percent of their field goal tries to Northern Iowa's 37.9 percent. Indiana State this time connected on 6-of-10 from 3-point distance.

The Sycamores had the edge in points off turnovers, 15-6, and from the free- throw line, 30-17. Northern Iowa won the battle in points in the paint, 36-26.
