Recap: Loyola-Chicago vs. UC Davis
Portland, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - Corey Hawkins netted 17 points to help the UC Davis Aggies to a 64-61 overtime win over the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers in the Portland State Tournament at Stott Center.
Hawkins made 6-of-14 shots from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line for the Aggies (3-2). Ryan Sypkens sank 5-of-6 from 3-point range and finished with 15 points. Josh Ritchart contributed nine points and nine rebounds.
Devon Turk led the Ramblers (2-4) with 17 points on 6-of-11 from the floor. Christian Thomas chipped in 14 points and Jeff White tacked on 11.
In a fairly lopsided first half, the Aggies shot 50 percent from the field to the Ramblers' mere 28 percent. The Ramblers were also only able to hit 2- of-10 shots from long range. At halftime, the score was 30-22 in favor of UC Davis.
The Aggies consistency dropped off in the second half, where they made only a third of their field goal tries. The Ramblers shooting improved 37.5 percent from the field and they also made 10-of-13 at the charity stripe, coming back to take the lead late in regulation. UC Davis needed a last-second 3-pointer from Sypkens to take the game to overtime.
With 31 seconds left in overtime, Doyle Milton missed his second free throw attempt for Loyola-Chicago, which would have tied the game at 62. After getting the offensive rebound, the Ramblers turned the ball over, which led to a Hawkins's layup that put the game away for the Aggies, 64-61.
UC Davis bested its opponent in points in the paint (30-22), points off turnovers (24-16) and fast break points (11-2) in the nail-biting win.Game Notes
