Recap: Loyola-Chicago vs. Southern Ill

Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Desmar Jackson led all scorers with 31 points, while also dishing out six assists and nabbing four steals, as the Southern Illinois Salukis downed the Loyola Chicago Ramblers, 71-67, in a Missouri Valley Conference matchup at Gentile Arena.

For the Salukis (5-11, 1-2 MVC), Anthony Beane added 15 points, Jalen Pendleton scored 14 and Sean O'Brien pulled down 12 rebounds.

Christian Thomas posted a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Ramblers (6-9, 1-2), while Milton Doyle finished with 17 points and Devon Turk chipped in with 15.

Southern Illinois hit on 50 percent of its field goal tries, including 2-of-7 from 3-point range in the first half. The Salukis finished the half on an 8-2 run and went into halftime holding a 36-35 lead. Loyola shot 56 percent in the first half, making 3-of-7 from beyond the arc.

The Salukis connected on 59.1 percent from the field but made only one of their six 3-point tries, while the Ramblers drained 54.5 percent of their field goal attempts and 4-of-10 from beyond the arc in the second period.

Trailing 67-65, Pendleton scored on a layup with 57 seconds left to tie the game and after a steal by Beane, Pendleton scored the go-ahead basket with just six seconds on the clock. Doyle had a chance to send the game to overtime but missed the front end of a one-and-one with one second remaining. After the Ramblers lost the ensuing rebound, Jackson knocked down two free throws to set the final score, as the Salukis pulled out the victory.

Loyola was saddled with 17 turnovers, eight of which were attributed to Doyle.
