Recap: Austin Peay vs. Southern Ill

Clarksville, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Will Triggs netted 17 points to lead the Austin Peay Governors, as they held off a furious comeback attempt by the Southern Illinois Salukis to win, 72-70, at the Dunn Center.

Travis Betran added 16 points for Austin Peay (2-1), Damarius Smith scored 12 points off the bench and Chris Horton tallied six points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks.

For SIU (0-3), Desmar Jackson led all scorers with 29 points and made it a double-double with 10 rebounds. Jalen Pendleton and Anthony Beane poured in 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Bronson Verhines corralled 10 rebounds.

Although SIU outshot Austin Peay from the field in the first half, 46.4 percent to 43.3 percent, the Governors took a 35-32 lead into the break after shooting 8-of-11 from the foul line in the opening stanza.

Austin Peay took control early in the second half and led by as many as 17 with 11:31 remaining, but SIU would not go away quietly. The Salukis chipped away at their deficit until they tied the game with 1:19 left on a Pendleton free throw, but the Governors stopped the bleeding on their next possession when Betran converted a three-point play, and they held from there.

Austin Peay outscored SIU at the foul line, 22-14, which helped overcome a minus-14 rebounding margin.
