Recap: Utah State vs. UC Santa Barbara

Logan, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Spencer Butterfield erupted for 31 points and also pulled down 10 rebounds as he helped guide the Utah State Aggies to a 77-71 overtime victory against the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos as part of the annual Basketball Travelers Classic at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

Also scoring in double figures for the Aggies (8-2) were Preston Medlin and Ben Clifford with 14 and 10 points, respectively, while Kyle Davis accounted for 10 rebounds in the team's third straight win.

The Gauchos (6-4) were led by Kyle Boswell who turned his 7-of-11 shooting behind the 3-point line into 27 points off the bench as the team had a two- game win streak snapped. Alan Williams tallied 23 points on 10-of-24 shooting from the floor and added nine rebounds in the losing cause.

UCSB made a total of just 11 field goals in the first half, but five of those came from 3-point range, allowing the Gauchos to stay within two points at the break, 31-29.

In the second half the visitors not only knocked down 52.4 percent from the floor, they also made good on 10-of-11 at the free-throw line and 4-of-7 on the perimeter in order to take a lead as great as 10 midway through the period. However, USU was able to come back and send the meeting into overtime where the Aggies limited the visitors to just a pair of field goals and 0-of-3 on the perimeter.

Despite being beaten on the glass, 40-29, the Gauchos were able to keep the game close by turning the ball over just five times.

Once again the Aggies played without leading scorer Jarred Shaw (16.1 ppg) who has been suspended indefinitely for disciplinary reasons.

Both teams will be back in action on Saturday as USU hosts Troy and the Gauchos go up against Western Illinois on the third and final day of the tournament.
